The Vancouver Canucks announced Thursday their plans for the upcoming Roberto Luongo Night on December 14, 2023. On top of enshrining him in the team's Ring of Honour, the first 10,00 fans will receive a bobblehead of the Hall of Famer. The night will also feature tributes from former teammates as well as the rare starting goalie ceremonial faceoff. Expect plenty of emotions with the Florida Panthers in town as Vancouver honours arguably the greatest goaltender in franchise history.
During his career with the Canucks, Luongo played 448 regular season games and is the franchise leader in wins, shutouts, goals-against average (min 100 GP) and save percentage (min 100 GP). He backstopped Vancouver to Game Seven of the 2011 Stanley Cup Final and won Gold for Canada at Rogers Arena during the 2010 Olympics. Despite playing less than half of his career in a Cancuks jersey, he made a massive impact on Vancouver that still resonates almost a decade after playing his last game for this organization.
While his name is headed for the Ring of Honour, expect plenty of debate within the Vancouver market about whether or not his number should have been retired. Considering the careers of the six players who have had their numbers retired, it seems like a no-brainer that Luongo should see his number one rise to the rafters on the 14th. Regardless, this is a great opportunity for Canuck fans to once again show their appreciation to one of the best players ever to represent Vancouver.
