Team Canada has announced their leadership group for the upcoming Spengler Cup, with former Vancouver Canucks defenceman being named captain. The pride of Victoria B.C. played 75 games, with Vancouver recording two goals and 16 points before being traded to the Winnipeg Jets during the 2020-21 season. During his time with the Canucks, Benn also played seven playoff games, recording 12 blocks and 16 hits during the 2020 bubble.
The tournament will also feature another Vancouver connection as Henrik Tömmernes suits up for Frölunda HC. The 2011 seventh-round pick never played a game for the Canucks but did play two seasons with the Utica Comets early in his career. Since returning to Europe, he has had a successful career in the SHL and NL, including playing in the Olympics and wearing the "C" for Sweden at the World Championship. With 14 points through 27 games this season, he is set to play a key role for Frölunda HC as they look to bring the Spengler Cup back to Sweden for the first time since 1994.
Canuck fans will not have to wait long to watch these two go head to head as Team Canada kicks off their tournament against Frölunda HC on Dec 26 at 11:15 AM PT. Team Canada and Frölunda HC will then each play HC Davos, with the date being determined by the result of their matchup on the 26th. Games will be broadcast later in the day on TSN or can be streamed via the Spengler Cup website.
