The Vancouver Canucks have been outscored by ten goals in the first period this season.

It is no secret that the Vancouver Canucks are struggling offensively this season. Through 44 games, they rank 22nd in the league in shots per game at 2.84 while ranking tied for last in shots at 25.1 per game. While there are many different reasons why the club is struggling to produce, one of the biggest problems remains Vancouver's play in the first period.

Heading into Saturday's matchup against the Edmonton Oilers, the Canucks rank last in the NHL in shots on goal during the first period. So far this season, 340 shots have hit the net, which is 28 fewer than the L.A. Kings and Montréal Canadiens, who are tied for 30th. Vancouver also has a -10 goal differential in the first, allowing 45 goals compared to scoring only 35. 

It is not just the first period where the Canucks have struggled to generate shots. They rank 31st with 341 third-period shots and have a -40 shot differential. While it isn't as bad as the -47 shot differential in the first, it is still very concerning that Vancouver has such a large shot disparity in multiple periods. 

Ultimately, the Canucks have become a very frustrating team to watch. They have recorded less than 25 shots in five of their last six games and have scored more than one goal just once in their previous five. Vancouver has also been outscored 81-63 at home, meaning fans at Rogers Arena are often left disappointed after a multi-goal loss. Whether it is a new offensive strategy or making a trade to mix up the roster, the Canucks need to find a way to generate more shots on goal through the first 20 minutes of games.
