No surprise new captain earns nod for strong start to preseason

The Hockey News Vancouver Canucks Player of the Week for the first week of the NHL preseason is new captain Quinn Hughes.

Hughes scored twice and set up another goal in Saturday's 5-2 win over Edmonton. He also scored against the Oilers in his first action of the preseason last Wednesdsay.

Two weeks shy of his 24th birthday, Hughes has a share of the team preseason scoring lead with 3+1=4 and leads the Canucks with 11 shots on goal through two games so far.

With his training camp and preseason off to a strong start, this will surely not be the last time Hughes is named the Canucks player of the week.

A question remains about who will start the season on the right side with Hughes on the Canucks defense. As such, Hughes may play in both of the team's remaining exhibition games to allow the audition process to continue. Rookie Cole McWard has played their twice in the preseason and was back with Hughes at Sunday's practice. Noah Juulsen and Carson Soucy saw time time with Hughes through training camp in Victoria.
