Report: Former Canuck Sven Baertschi to retire from professional hockey

According to a report out of Switzerland, former Vancouver Canucks forward Sven Baertschi is set to announce his retirement from professional hockey at the age of 30.

Baertschi spent parts of 10 seasons in the National Hockey League and played 225 of his 292 career games for the Canucks from 2014 through 2020. In his time in Vancouver, Baertschi scored 58 goals and added 52 assists. His best season came in 2016-17 when he scored a career-high 18 goals and 35 points.

For three consecutive seasons, Baertschi recorded between 14 and 18 goals. However, his productivity dipped significantly after a concussion suffered in Las Vegas early in the 2018-19 season. He was limited to just 26 games that season and played only seven NHL games after that season. He spent the bulk of his final two seasons in the Canucks organization toiling in the American Hockey League in Utica.

Baertschi finished his NHL career by playing one game for the Vegas Golden Knights in 2021-22.

Originally, Baertschi was the 13th overall pick in the 2011 NHL Draft by the Calgary Flames. He was acquired by the Canucks for a second round draft pick that the Flames used to select defenseman Rasmus Andersson.

During his NHL career, Baertschi appeared in just two playoff games both for the Canucks against Calgary in 2015.

Baertschi spent last season in the Swiss A-League playing for his hometown team in Bern. He managed just four goals and 14 points in 36 games.
