It was out with the old and in with the new year for the Canucks.

Welcome to The Weekly Rewind, a column published every Monday that recaps the past week of Vancouver Canucks hockey, including the team’s record, players with the highest stats, and more. This week, we’ll be looking at what the Canucks got up to from December 30, 2024 to January 5, 2025.

In Vancouver’s last game of 2024, the Canucks faced off against the Calgary Flames and ultimately lost 3–1. The lone Canucks goal was scored on the power play by Brock Boeser, who extended his goal-scoring streak to four games. He’d scored six goals in that same span of time. Kevin Lankinen made the start for the Canucks, and would later become a key factor for the week.

Thursday night was the Canucks’ first game of the New Year, serving as a dose of redemption against a Seattle Kraken team that beat them 5–4 last Saturday. After giving up the 4–1 lead at home, Canucks fans watching on Thursday were sure to be nervous as Vince Dunn tied the score at 3–3 for Seattle with less than a minute left in the third period. However, that wasn’t the biggest point of concern for Vancouver in this game, as shortly after Conor Garland’s 2–1 goal, Thatcher Demko left the game due to injury. While Canucks Head Coach Rick Tocchet clarified that the goaltender’s departure was due to back spasms, Demko is currently travelling with the team on their upcoming road trip.

The Canucks returned to Vancouver on Friday night for a quick match against the Nashville Predators. Despite registering a season-high of 51 hits in one game, with Phil Di Giuseppe leading the way with nine, Vancouver couldn’t beat Juuse Saros and lost 3–0. Two of Nashville’s goals were scored on an empty net.
