The first full week of new Canucks.
Welcome to The Weekly Rewind, a column published every Monday that recaps the past week of Vancouver Canucks hockey, including the team’s record, players with the highest stats, and more. This week, we’ll be looking at what the Canucks got up to from February 3 to 9, 2025.
Latest From THN's Vancouver Canucks Site:
Vancouver started their week with a commanding 3–0 win against the Colorado Avalanche. Thatcher Demko was phenomenal in the effort, stopping all 25 shots that he faced. It was Demko’s first shutout of the season, and a well-deserved one to boot. Pius Suter, Kiefer Sherwood, and Drew O’Connor did a great job of locking up Nathan MacKinnon’s line — a matchup that some initially expected would go to Elias Pettersson or Filip Chytil.
The Canucks also made some news between games this week, locking new addition Marcus Pettersson up with a six-year deal sporting an annual average of $5.5M. Despite only being in Vancouver for two games at the time, Pettersson noted that the passionate fan base was something that encouraged him to sign early.
“I saw a few of the games in the playoffs last year, and how much the city rallies around the team,” he said after signing. “I’m really excited.”
Pettersson was not the only one with his last name to make waves this week, as in Thursday night’s game against the San Jose Sharks, Elias Pettersson (D) showed his willingness to get the puck to the net by recording three shots in the first period. He also demonstrated some spunk by getting physical in the previous match. Despite not making it on the scoresheet, he was noticeable in Vancouver’s 2–1 overtime win against the Sharks.
Vancouver wrapped up the week with some bad news. Halfway through the first period of their game against the Toronto Maple Leafs, Demko exited the game with an unconfirmed injury that Canucks head coach Rick Tocchet believes is not serious. Kevin Lankinen entered in relief, stopping all but one shot that he faced and helping backstop the team to a gritty 2–1 win.
