The biggest news of the week came on Friday — but not because of the game.

Welcome to The Weekly Rewind, a column published every Monday that recaps the past week of Vancouver Canucks hockey, including the team’s record, players with the highest stats, and more. This week, we’ll be looking at what the Canucks got up to from January 27 to February 2, 2025.

The Canucks started their week off by welcoming Tyler Myers back into the lineup. They kicked off the first of a three-game road trip with a 5–2 win against the St. Louis Blues, with Myers registering a goal and an assist in his comeback. With this victory, Vancouver increased their win streak to two games — a feat accomplished only four other times this season.

On Wednesday, Vancouver took their win streak to three games with a 3–1 win against the Nashville Predators. The trio of Nils Höglander, Elias Pettersson, and Linus Karlsson impressed in this game, factoring in two of the team’s three goals in the game. Thatcher Demko backstopped the team to the win with marvelous saves, saving 31 shots and posting a .969 SV%.

Friday was when the Canucks organization took a massive shift. Only an hour before the game, news broke that J.T. Miller had been traded to the New York Rangers alongside Erik Brännström and Jackson Dorrington in exchange for Filip Chytil, Victor Mancini, and a protected first-round pick. Without their top-scoring forward in the lineup, Vancouver looked noticeably rattled, losing 5–3 to the Dallas Stars. Soon after the game ended, the organization announced that they acquired Marcus Pettersson and Drew O’Connor from the Pittsburgh Penguins, sending Vincent Desharnais, Danton Heinen, Melvin Fernström, and the aforementioned first-round pick the other way.

In Sunday’s match against the Detroit Red Wings, all four of Vancouver’s newly-acquired players made their debuts for the team. Chytil impressed fans with patient hands that led to a game-tying goal, while Elias Pettersson (D) recorded his first career point in the NHL. However, despite a rebound effort from the new-look team, Vancouver fell 3–2 to Detroit in overtime. As the Canucks look towards the next week, their biggest concern is Quinn Hughes, who took warmups on Sunday but ultimately ended up not playing.

    Facts and Stats:

    Team record: 2–1–1

    Highest points-getter: Quinn Hughes (5)

Most goals: Conor Garland and Pius Suter (3)

    Most assists: Quinn Hughes (3)

    Most hits: Noah Juulsen (12)

Most faceoffs taken: Elias Pettersson (58)

    Most blocks: Derek Forbort (12)

This is the last week of play before the 4 Nations Break. With only three players suiting up for the tournament, most Canucks will have time off until February 22. Before then, this Tuesday, they will take on a Colorado Avalanche team that has also undergone a significant lineup change with the additions of Martin Nečas and Jack Drury. On Thursday, they travel to California to play the San Jose Sharks. They return to Vancouver on Saturday for a matchup with the Toronto Maple Leafs at 4:00 pm PT.
