Elias Pettersson puts himself among NHL scoring leaders with four point week

Elias Pettersson is The Hockey News Vancouver Canucks player of the week. Get used to hearing this. It may be the first time it's happened this season, but surely it won't be the last.

Pettersson had a goal and three assists in three Canucks games over the past seven days. Like all of his teammates, he was held off the scoresheet in a 2-0 loss in Philadelphia. But he responded with a pair of two-point performances in Tampa Bay and Florida. His four points for the week give him 10 points on the season which leaves him tied for third in NHL scoring behind Detroit teammates Alex DeBrincat and Dylan Larkin. Pettersson and Larkin share the league lead with eight assists apiece.

Pettersson has had four multi-point nights in five Canucks games so far this season. With 10 points, he has had a hand in half of the 20 goals the Canucks have scored.

The 24-year-old is building a strong early-season case for his much-talked about contract extension. He will be a restricted free agent after this season and is eligible to sign an extension with the Canucks at any time, but has said he wants to be patient to see how the season unfolds.

The Canucks are off to a 3-2 start after a 5-3 win in Florida on Saturday night. They finish a five game road trip in Nashville on Tuesday.
