The Vancouver Canucks kicked off their 2024 Training Camp on Thursday from Penticton. There were plenty of notable moments, including some early line combinations and an injury update from Thatcher Demko. Here is a look at some of the biggest storylines from Thursday.

    Thatcher Demko Address The Media

After some on-ice practice with goaltending coach Marko Torenius, Demko met with the media to discuss his injury status. Demko revealed that he has been dealing with a muscle injury that is so unique that they could not find another goaltender who has experienced the same issue. While the Canucks starting goaltender did not have an exact timetable for his return, he is getting better day by day and hopes not to be sidelined for too much longer.

    Intriguing Forward Line Combinations

As for the on-ice practice, Rick Tocchet and his staff tested out some intriguing forward lines. J.T. Miller was partnered with Brock Boeser and Danton Heinen, while Jake DeBrusk and Jonathan Lekkerimäki flanked Elias Pettersson. While there is no guarantee that these lines will stay the same come the preseason, they do give a glimpse into what trios the organization is considering heading into the season.

Hughes And Hronek Skating In Different Groups

One interesting decision was that Quinn Hughes and Filip Hronek were split on Day 1 of Training Camp. Hughes spent the day partnered with Noah Juulsen in Group B, while Hronek skated beside defenceman Elias Pettersson as part of Group A. As mentioned, it is only the first day, but this could be a sign that Tocchet and his coaching staff are at least looking at the possibility of seeing if they can balance their blue line and play each on a different pair.

Day 2 of Training Camp is scheduled from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., with doors at the South Okanagan Events Centre opening at 9:00 a.m.
