2025 Free Agency Rundown

Edmonton was rumoured to be in contention for Brock Boeser, though the forward ultimately chose to go back to the organization that he has been with for the past decade. With Boeser not panning out for the Oilers, Edmonton switched gears and signed names like Andrew Mangiapane and Curtis Lazar, also acquiring Isaac Howard from the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for Sam O’Reilly. They also extended the contracts of players such as Trent Frederic (eight years), Evan Bouchard (four years), and Kasperi Kapanen (one year).

In terms of departures, Edmonton kicked the off-season off by trading Evander Kane to the Canucks. They also parted ways with Viktor Arvidsson via trade. Drake Caggiula, Connor Brown, Corey Perry, and John Klingberg have also left the organization in free agency.

2025–26 Season Series Preview

Edmonton is coming off their second straight Stanley Cup Finals loss to the Florida Panthers. While the Oilers look to be one of the strongest teams in their division heading into the 2025–26 season, there’s a much more pressing issue that hockey fans all over are eyeing. McDavid is entering the final season of an eight-year deal with the Oilers and is currently extension-eligible. If the Oilers lose out on the Stanley Cup for a third consecutive season, it could spell trouble for McDavid’s future in Edmonton.

Vancouver will take the Oilers on early in the season, heading to Edmonton on October 11 for their first matchup of the season. They won’t have to wait too long for a rematch after this, as the Oilers make their way to Vancouver for a game on October 26. The Canucks face the Oilers two more times after this, with a trip to Edmonton marking the end of their 2025–26 regular season.
