The Vancouver Canucks have assigned 20-year-old goaltender Ty Young to the Kalamazoo Wings. With a crowded crease in the AHL, a move to the ECHL should help Young get more game action this season. Young is still eligible to return to the WHL, but with this move to the ECHL, that seems unlikely this season.

Drafted 144th overall in 2022, Young spent his entire WHL career with the Prince George Cougars. In four seasons, he posted a record of 44-35-8, with a .896 save percentage and a goals-against average of 3.36. Young signed his entry-level contract with the Canucks on September 25, 2023, and is one of six goaltenders currently signed by the organization.

Young was impressive both during Young Stars and Training Camp. During the Young Stars tournament, he stopped 28 of the 30 shots he faced in a 4-2 victory over the Winnipeg Jets. He also played in one game during the 2023 tournament, stopping 27 of 29 in a 3-2 shootout loss to Winnipeg.

As for the Wings, they open their season on October 19 against the Cincinnati Cyclones. Last season, Kalamazoo finished with a record of 38-30-4, but were swept by the Toledo Walleye in the first round. Vancouver recently renewed its contract with the Wings, with the two organizations agreeing on a two-year affiliation deal.
