On January 31, 2025, the Vancouver Canucks and New York Rangers pulled off a blockbuster trade. The move saw Vancouver send J.T. Miller, Erik Brännström and Jackson Dorrington to New York in exchange for Filip Chytil, Victor Mancini and a first-round pick. This trade shook up each team's rosters and has created plenty of debate within both fanbases.

On Saturday, the Canucks and the Rangers will face off for the first time since completing this trade. The game at MSG will have a playoff vibe to it, as each team is battling for a spot in the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs. Saturday's contest also provides an opportunity to look at which team has performed better since the deal.

Since February 1, both Vancouver and New York have nine wins and 20 points. The Canucks have played 18 games with a record of 9-7-2, while the Rangers have played 20 with a record of 9-9-2. Both teams are currently below the playoff bar but are within two points of the second Wild Card position.

Looking at special teams, Vancouver has had the advantage since the trades. Over their past 18 games, the Canucks have a power play percentage of 22.5% compared to 14.6% for New York. Vancouver's penalty kill has also been significantly better, posting a 92.7% kill rate compared to the Rangers' 78.2%.

As for goals, New York has been able to find the back of the net more consistently than the Canucks. The Rangers are averaging 2.95 goals per game, compared to Vancouver's 2.61. That being said, the Canucks do hold the advantage in goals against per game, as they are averaging 2.67 compared to 2.90.

Lastly, both teams have struggled to outshoot their opponents since the trades. Vancouver has averaged 24.7 shots per game compared to 25.7 against. As for New York, they are averaging 25.6 shots per game but are giving up an average of 28 on a nightly basis.

Based on the early statistics, the Canucks have been the better team since the trade. They have a higher points percentage and have been able to avoid longer losing streaks, unlike the Rangers. In the end, the winner of this deal won't be decided for a while, but debates will continue to happen long after the players in the trade have retired.

Vancouver continues their six-game road trip on Saturday morning with a matchup against New York. A win is crucial as the Canucks continue to battle for a spot in the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs. Puck drop from Madison Square Garden is scheduled for 10:00 am PT.
