Vancouver scored five goals or more for the 16th time this season.
The Vancouver Canucks (27-11-3) finished the first half of the season on a high note, defeating the New York Islanders (18-12-10) 5-2 on Tuesday night. With the victory, Vancouver extended their record when leading after two periods to 24-0 while also picking up their league-leading 26th regulation win of the season. The Canucks also extended their record to 21-5-1 when scoring first and remain the only team in the league with over 20 victories when scoring first.
Vancouver's victory over the Islanders was arguably one of their best of the season. They controlled the game from start to finish and held New York to just nine shots through the final 40 minutes. Despite being at a disadvantage, having played the night prior, the Canucks showed why many around the league consider them a contender as they handed the Islanders just their fifth regulation home loss of the season.
Here is what head coach Rick Tocchet had to say after the game:
"I just thought the consistency from everybody. There was a lot of good efforts tonight. I thought pretty much the whole bench, a lot of guys contributed. Thought we had a good first, a lot of energy. When you have these types of games, in the first period of a back-to-back, I thought when we came out the first bunch of shifts, I go these guys are ready to play. To win three games in the Tri-State, in New York and New Jersey, that's tough to do."
