Quinn Hughes set the record against the Detroit Red Wings.
With an assist on a goal by Jake DeBrusk, Quinn Hughes has passed Alex Edler’s franchise record of 310 assists by a defenceman. His 311th career assist came in a Sunday morning matchup against the Detroit Red Wings on the power play. The assist was Hughes' 21st of the season and his 10th on the power play.
Latest From THN's Vancouver Canucks Site:
Hughes is now the sole leader in points by a defenceman in Vancouver Canucks history. He surpassed not only Edler but franchise greats Dennis Kearns (290), Doug Lidster (242), and Jyrki Lumme (238) as well. He reached the franchise record in only 388 games, a solid 537 games less than Edler (925).
Canucks fans knew that Hughes would be special before he even stepped onto the ice. Drafted seventh overall in 2018, Hughes has spent his entire NHL career with the Canucks, and was named captain of the team ahead of the 2023–24 regular season. Before joining Vancouver, he spent two years at the University of Michigan, racking up 62 points (10G, 52A) in 69 games played. He made the jump to the NHL directly after wrapping up his university career, playing his first game on March 28, 2019, against the L.A. Kings.
Hughes has made massive strides since he started skating for the Canucks. He was named to his first All-Star Game in 2020 and placed second in voting for the Calder Memorial Trophy in the same year. In 2024, he won his first James Norris Memorial Trophy off of a career-high 92-point season. He’s currently operating at above a points-per-game pace with five goals, and now 21 assists in 23 games played.
