Vancouver Canucks prospect Melvin Fernström is having a strong start to the 2024-25 season. Fernström, who was drafted in the third round on the 2024 NHL Entry Draft, is currently playing for Örebro HK and is splitting time between the J20 Nationall and the SHL. He has already played three games in each league and is one of two U19 players to score a goal in the SHL this season.

Starting with the J20 Nationall, Fernström has two goals and one assist in three games. Fernström also has 15 shots on goal, showing that he is not afraid to fire the puck when in scoring positions. As for Örebro HK, they have struggled when he is not in the lineup, going 0-4-1, compared to 2-1-0 with Fernström. The only drafted player on the J20 roster, Fernström will need to play a big role for the team whenever he is in the lineup.

As for the SHL, Fernström has one goal and one assist in three games. During those three games, he has averaged 8:22 of ice time, recorded three shots on goal and has a Corsi of 57%. While limited, Fernström also has seen some time on the power play, clocking 35 seconds with the man advantage. Overall, Fernström has shown he can provide value to the lineup at the SHL level and may even be in store for some top-six opportunities as the season progresses.

While it is early, Fernström's start to the season is very encouraging. He is a force at the J20 level and is making an impact with the SHL team. If he can keep this up, Fernström should finish the year as one of the top U19 players in Sweden, which could also book him a spot on Sweden's World Junior team alongside fellow Canucks prospect Tom Willander come December.
