The Vancouver Canucks should claim Tampa Bay Lightning winger Alex Barré-Boulet off waivers to bolster its forward depth.
Barré-Boulet was placed on waivers today and is on an expiring contract, making a team-friendly $758,333.
The speedy winger is 26-years-old and has six goals and three assists in 36 games played this season. He has a keen ability to spin off checks along the boards, which is something the Canucks could utilize on the forecheck.
He was playing on the Lightning's second powerplay unit on the flank, as he has an above-average shot.
He has shown that he has some offense in his game. During the 2022-23 season, he had 84 points (24 goals, 60 assists) in 69 games with the Syracuse Crunch in the AHL.
Since earning a full-time NHL role, he has settled in nicely as a third-line winger for the Bolts' head coach, Jon Cooper. If the Phil Kessel experiment doesn't work, Barré-Boulet could provide the same, if not a little better, play. The only difference is that Kessel has Stanley Cup pedigree.
With a low cap hit and offensive upside, the Canucks can take a chance on Barré-Boulet without giving up any more assets before the trade deadline.
