Quinn Hughes Could Set Yet Another Canucks Single Season Record This Year

Quinn Hughes has 12 goals through the Vancouver Canucks first 45 games this season.

THN's The Wrap Around Show- Quinn Hughes 2025 Norris Trophy

Quinn Hughes has taken his game to another level this season. The Vancouver Canucks captain is on pace for 95 points in 2024-25 and has been mentioned in both the Norris Trophy and Hart Trophy conversations. Already the greatest defenceman in franchise history, Hughes is on pace to tie yet another single-season record by the end of the campaign.

While Hughes is mostly known as a playmaker, his shot has become an underrated part of his game. Through his first 41 games this season, he has 12 goals, which ranks fourth among defenders. Not only is he on pace to smash his career high of 17, but he is also on track to tie Adrian Aucoin's franchise record for goals by a defenseman in a season with 23 goals.

Aucoin's record has stood since the 1998-99 season, which means it is older than Hughes, who was born in October 1999. In fact, it is also the only season in franchise history where a defender has eclipsed the 20-goal mark. While there have been some valiant efforts in franchise history, like Doug Halward's 19-goal campaign in 1982-83, no one has been able to match Aucoin, who surprisingly had double the goals (23) compared to assists (11) over two and a half decades ago.

On top of the single-season goal-scoring record, it is possible Hughes also ties the franchise record for most shots by a defenceman in a season. Hughes currently sits at 123 shots and is averaging three per game. If he continues this pace, he would finish with 234, which would be 12 off the record, which is currently held by Jocelyn Guevremont and was established in 1972-73. Based on the way Hughes has been shooting the puck lately, it is possible that he can catch Guevremont this season.

The fact that Hughes is on pace to at least tie this record shows just how dynamic a player he can be. He continues to evolve his game, which is why he has developed into a star in the NHL. On pace to break Alex Edler's all-time franchise points record this season, it shouldn't take too many more years before Hughes also has the most goals by a defenceman in Vancouver Canucks history.
