While the Vancouver Canucks have been successful over their past 10 games, they continue to struggle in the offensive zone. Since January 25, the Canucks have 24 goals, while their 2.4 goals per game during that span ranks 25th in the NHL. With just four goals scored over their past three games, now would be the perfect time for the organization to call up Jonathan Lekkerimäki to help boost their offence.
Latest From THN's Vancouver Canucks Site:
Lekkerimäki has been a goal-scoring machine this season for the Abbotsford Canucks. In 30 games, he has 18 goals, which ranks fourth among rookies in the AHL. Lekkerimäki also averages 3.63 shots per game, ranking eighth across the entire league.
One of Vancouver's biggest issues this season has been shot generation. Over their last five games, the Canucks have averaged 25.8 shots per game, which is slightly above their average for the season, which is 25.5. As for their shot leaders, only five players have recorded double-digit total shots in their last five games, with Filip Chytil leading the way at 16.
Before moving on, it is also important to note that Quinn Hughes not being in the lineup has been a factor in Vancouver's low shot totals. The Canucks captain is averaging 2.9 shots per game and helps open lanes for other players. That being said, there are plenty of players with high offensive talent on the roster who should have been able to step up their game during his absence.
Vancouver's inability to score is why calling up Lekkerimäki is a smart idea. As mentioned, he is one of the best shot generators in the AHL and has six goals in his last nine games with Abbotsford. Lekkerimäki also has at least two shots in each of his previous six games, which includes a three-shot effort on Sunday night against the Tucson Roadrunners.
In his 11 NHL games, Lekkerimäki has shown he is capable of generating offensive chances. He has 16 shots, 33 shot attempts, and has scored twice this season. Lekkerimäki has also shown he has some physicality to his game, as he has been credited with six hits as well as three blocked shots.
While calling up Lekkerimäki won't fix the problem instantly, it does add some extra offensive power to the lineup. The 20-year-old might also be able to help on the power play, which continues to play a role in why the Canucks aren't scoring. With only 25 games remaining, Vancouver needs to find a way to fix their offence; otherwise, it could mean missing out on the 2025 Stanely Cup Playoffs.
