Bruce Cassidy speaks to media after practice on Jan. 10, 2023 Ilya Samsonov will start as the Vegas Golden Knights host the New York Rangers. The Rangers come into Vegas after beating the New Jersey Devils 3-2 in overtime. The Rangers have had a disappointing season but are filled with talent and could easily turn their season around. With saying that, the Rangers have struggled in every aspect of the game. They are in the lower half in goals scored per game and are among the NHL's worst in goals allowed per game. One part of their game where they have thrived is on the penalty kill where they rank 7th in the NHL. The Golden Knights are coming off of a hard beating to the New York Islanders where they were shut out, losing 4-0. Where the Rangers struggled, the Golden Knights thrived. They rank in the top 10 in goals scored, power play percentage, shots on goal per game and shooting percentage. Defensively, the Golden Knights rank in the top 10 in goals allowed and penalty minutes. Tonight's goaltender matchup will feature two Russian goaltenders coming in and playing at different levels. Igor Shesterkin has been inconsistent, winning just one of his last four games. Samsonov enters tonight's contest winning his last six starts.
