Golden Knights' Jack Eichel Nets Hat Trick And Brett Howden Hits A Milestone In A Dominant Win
The Vegas Golden Knights thrashed the Minnesota Wild 5-1 thanks to a hat trick from Jack Eichel and a milestone-setting goal from Brett Howden.  Eichel and Tomas Hertl have not only been two of the hottest players on the Golden Knights, but two of the hottest players in the NHL. With Tomas Hertl out for at least a week, the Golden Knights were in search of more goal-scoring, and Eichel stepped up. Hertl and Pavel Dorofeyev lead the team with 30 goals, and Eichel looks poised for a late push to steal that crown. The 28-year-old opened the scoring in the first period, finishing off a neat behind-the-back pass by captain Mark Stone.  He'd added his second of the game in the third period with his patent shot from the half wall on the power play. Very few players in the NHL can load up a one-timer like Eichel can, but on this goal he didn't need to. He corralled the puck and fired a wrist shot into the top corner.  With the Golden Knights up 4-1, Eichel was sprung on a 2-on-1 and beat former Golden Knights Marc-Andre Fleury through the legs to complete the hat trick, bringing him up to 26 goals, now just four back of the team lead.  "He's just a good player, he stands out every night," said HC Bruce Cassidy. "There was a little fatigue a month ago coming out of the tournament, and he seems to have found his rhythm again." Eichel deservedly took the headlines, but Howden's second-period tally did not go unnoticed. The former 2016 first-round pick has obliterated his previous career-highs and has reached the 20-goal milestone for the first time in his career.  His 34 points ranked eighth on the team, and his 20 goals are equal with Ivan Barbashev for the fourth most.  The 26-year-old was drafted into the NHL for his two-way game and high work ethic, but also for his point production in the juniors. He was never able to carve out a role with the New York Rangers, but things began to click for Howden when he joined the Golden Knights. He found his spot playing in the bottom six, providing energy and speed to go along with his defensive acumen at 5-on-5 and the penalty kill. "That's good for Howie," said Cassidy. "We use everywhere in the lineup, and he doesn't always get the glory offensive spots and o-zone starts, he doesn't get any power play time, so good on him. It was a hard-working goal and that tends to be a lot of his goals." Multiple key contributors exited the organization in the previous offseason, which opened up space for Howden to garner a larger role.  His 14:51 of ice time is the highest of his Golden Knights tenure, and Cassidy has trusted Howden to play up and down the line, as well as in the middle of the ice or on the wing. He's become an indispensable player for the Golden, and it's why he was given a five-year contract.  Stay updated with the most interesting Golden Knights stories, analysis, breaking news and more! Golden Knights' Alex Pietrangelo Out Against Wild; Considered Day-To-Day
The Vegas Golden Knights are welcoming back Shea Theodore, but will be without Alex Pietrangelo as he is considered day-to-day with a lower-body injury. The new injury status comes as a surprise, with no prior sense that Pietrangelo has been dealing with any injury. The 35-year-old has played in 67 games this year, scoring four goals and 32 points. He's averaging 22:29 of ice time, the lowest of his Golden Knights tenure.  With Pietrangelo out, Kaedan Korczak will remain in the lineup, skating alongside Nicolas Hague on the third pairing. It'll be his 14th consecutive game in the Golden Knights lineup, continuing his solid play despite limited minutes.  Stay updated with the most interesting Golden Knights stories, analysis, breaking news and more! Golden Knights' Shea Theodore Activated From Injured Reserve; In Line To Return
Vegas Golden Knights defenseman Shea Theodore has been activated from the long-term injured reserve and is in line to make his return to the lineup against the Minnesota Wild.  HC Bruce Cassidy announced that Theodore would be a game-time decision tonight, and whether he plays or not is completely up to him. He's participated in multiple practices with contact and took line rushes alongside his usual partner, Brayden McNabb.  Danny Webster of the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported that Raphael Lavoie had been removed from the Golden Knights roster, indicating he was sent down to the Henderson Silver Knights.  Doing so opens a roster spot for Theodore and paves the way for him to slide back into the lineup.  The 29-year-old hasn't played an NHL game since Feb. 8 and hasn't played since Feb. 12, when he sustained the injury at the 4 Nations Face-Off.  His return means Kaedan Korczak will likely exit the lineup. The 24-year-old had done a serviceable job in Theodore's absence, playing in 13 games. Korczak is averaging 14:41 of ice time this season, recording eight assists in 31 games.  The expectation is for Theodore to return to his spot on the Golden Knights' No.1 power play unit and take advantage of offensive situations.  Tonight's fixture is a potential first-round matchup, and it should allow Theodore to get back into the mental state of preparing for the playoffs.  Stay updated with the most interesting Golden Knights stories, analysis, breaking news and more! Shea Theodore To Accompany Golden Knights On Road Trip; Game-Time Decision Against Wild
General Manager Kelly McCrimmon was a guest on the VGK Insider Show and mentioned that Shea Theodore will accompany the Vegas Golden Knights on their upcoming road trip and will play at some point on the trip. Theodore has been out since the first game of the 4 Nations Face-Off after suffering what appeared to be a wrist injury. The initial timetable given on his status was week-to-week, and it appears he is inching closer to a return. In this morning's skate ahead of their matchup against the Minnesota Wild, Theodore practiced alongside his usual defence partner, Brayden McNabb. Following the practice, HC Bruce Cassidy stated that Theodore is a game-time decision and the decision of whether he'll play or not is completely up to him.  He's participated in multiple practices now, both without contact and with contact, signally the recovery process is going accordingly. The Golden Knights recently welcomed back William Karlsson, who had also spent time on the long-term injury reserve. The pair of Original Misfits are essential to the Golden Knights' success, and allowing them time to revamp before the beginning of the playoffs could be vital. Tomas Hertl exited Sunday's game against the Tampa Bay Lightning after he was hit awkwardly into the boards. The initial reports haven't been good, with McCrimmon stating that he will not make the trip with the team and is ruled out for the rest of the week. Hertl will undergo more tests to determine the severity of the injury.  Losing Hertl at this time of the season is a major blow, but adding Theodore back into the line should, at the very least, help cushion it. Very few defensemen possess the offensive abilities Theodore has, scoring seven goals and 48 points in 55 games this season.  The Golden Knights' road trip begins tonight against the Wild, followed by encounters with the Chicago Blackhawks on Friday and the Nashville Predators on Saturday, any of which could be the return game for Theodore.  Stay updated with the most interesting Golden Knights stories, analysis, breaking news and more! Knights Center Tomas Hertl Will Not Accompany Team For Three-Game Road Trip That Begins Tuesday In Minnesota
LAS VEGAS -- The Golden Knights lost red-hot Tomas Hertl to an upper-body injury during Sunday's 4-2 win over the Lightning. General manager Kelly McCrimmon said Monday on the Golden Knights Insider Show that Hertl did not make the trip and will not play this week. Coach Bruce Cassidy said after the game Hertl was being re-evaluated at that moment and would be once again Monday morning while holding out hope for good news. But one earlier report said otherwise. "It's the shoulder ... I didn't like what I was hearing on Sunday night, but I am hoping that is wrong," Elliotte Friedman said during the 32 Thoughts podcast. "Initially, the word wasn't great. I'm just hoping that's wrong. "I don't know what to say here except that I heard they were a little bit concerned about it." Understandably, too, considering Hertl has been on a heater of late. While center Jack Eichel may have been named the NHL's second star this week, there's no doubt who's been the hottest Golden Knight the past few weeks. Hertl suffered the injury when he was pushed from behind by Lightning defenseman Emil Lilleberg after a breakaway opportunity was stopped by Tampa Bay goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy. Hertl went to gather the rebound when Lilleberg grabbed Hertl's hips and shoved him. Hertl slammed into the end boards shoulder first and did not return. Originally a five-minute major, the call was reduced to a two-minute boarding penalty. "That is a dirty hit in that area when a player is in that position," Golden Knights broadcaster Shane Hnidy said during the broadcast. "That's gotta be a five-minute major). I'm all for physical play but there's gotta be awareness." The Knights left for a three-game road trip on Monday, starting in Minnesota, so no update was provided. Vegas' trip begins Tuesday against the Wild, whom the Knights would face if the playoffs began now. A message for Hertl's agent, Craig Oster, went unreturned. A long-term loss could prove devastating for a Golden Knights offense that has come alive, ranking second with 3.92 goals-for per game during an 8-2-2 run since Feb. 27. Hertl has been a big part of that, as he followed up Saturday's hat trick against the Red Wings with a goal against Tampa Bay on Sunday. Hertl, whose 14 power-play goals are a franchise record, now has two hat tricks in his last eight games and leads the league with 19 goals since Jan. 17. His 28 points in the same span are tied with three others for 15th in the league. "He’s playing some of his best hockey he’s probably played in his career, never mind with us," Cassidy said Sunday night. McCrimmon did say defenseman Shea Theodore, who suffered a fractured wrist during the 4 Nation's Face-Off, would accompany the team on the trip and could return to the lineup.

As 4 Nations Face-Off Concludes, Golden Knights Russian Trio Hopeful Russia Returns To International Competition
LAS VEGAS --  As Team USA and Team Canada prepare for their epic gold medal game in the 4 Nations Face-Off on Thursday, one can't help but wonder what this event would be like if Russia had been included. Russia remains banned from international competition, and while this is an NHL-sanctioned event, the league continues to recognize the International Ice Hockey Federation's decision to keep a country with some of the world's best talent in the penalty box. That said, that hasn't doused the curiosity of the hockey world as to what a Russian lineup would look like. Even further, it hasn't stopped Russian players from sharing their thoughts. Vegas Golden Knights forward Ivan Barbashev a name that has popped up on several projected lineups if Russia was in the competing, said he hasn't spent much time watching the games, as he's been enjoying time with his kids. "I just don't have time for it, to be honest," said the 29-year-old two-time Stanley Cup champion who has represented Russia in five events as a junior. "I might catch, like, maybe 10 or 15 minutes of the game, and I'll just be playing with the kids. I mean, I don't really care, to be honest. I had a pretty good nine days off at the same time. "It'd probably be nice to be there. I think it would (make) things really interesting ... like it just probably (would) be more interesting if Russia was there. You know, like to bring more countries in that thing. It is what it is." Forward Pavel Dorofeyev, 24, last represented his country in 2020 and would have loved to be involved with 4 Nations. "I mean, it (would) be fun," Dorofeyev said. "It (would) be a great experience, especially for me, because I wasn't very much on a national team. So, last time when I played was World Juniors, and then one more tournament and that's it. It's been like four years, maybe five. I didn't think much about it, but it is what it is. (I'm) just enjoying watching the games right now." Whether he would have received an invite to participate, Dorofeyev definitely believes Russia should be included at some point. "Why not?" he said. "We got a bunch of good players. So I think we could be a good team out there." Golden Knights netminder Ilya Samsonov didn't offer a prediction on the title game with "a lot of friends on both teams," but did say Russia's involvement in international competition would be nice to see again. "Everybody knows we want to play again in Olympic Games, and four nationals, maybe five nationals, you never know," said Samsonov, 27. "Doesn't matter which name is tournament ... we still miss big hockey (events) for sure. We're just waiting until we start to play again. Yeah, (we) miss all of this." Samsonov, who represented Russia four times in juniors, added there is a little heartbreak to know his home country remains on the outside looking in. "Yeah, you know, like, for sure, it's hurt," he said. "Everybody want to play in a championship, Olympic games, like this tournament. It's really important for us, friends, for people in Russia, for family. But I'm trying to don't think about this too much. We have what we have right now ... and try to enjoy ... NHL."
