WASHINGTON — The Washington Capitals had the time to digest their 4-0 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins in their season opener, and now, they're looking to shake it off and secure their first win of the campaign on home ice as they take on the Calgary Flames on Monday.
Washington (0-1-0) avoided a major shakeup following the defeat and will rely on mostly similar lines to get the job done against the Flames (1-1-0).
Here are the projected lines.
Alex Ovechkin-Nicklas Backstrom-T.J. Oshie
Connor McMichael-Evgeny Kuznetsov-Tom Wilson
Sonny Milano-Dylan Strome-Matthew Phillips
Beck Malenstyn-Nic Dowd-Aliaksei Protas
Rasmus Sandin-John Carlson
Martin Fehervary-Trevor van Riemsdyk
Alex Alexeyev-Nick Jensen
Darcy Kuemper
Clay Stevenson
Anthony Mantha and Lucas Johansen were the extras on Sunday and are expected to be healthy scratches.
Darcy Kuemper is expected to make his first start of the season after missing the opener due to the birth of his first child. Charlie Lindgren is day-to-day after being injured at the optional morning skate, so Clay Stevenson is backing up.
Keep an eye on Alex Ovechkin. The 38-year-old is one goal away from the most era-adjusted goals in NHL history, and he's also been showcasing his heavy shot as he, Nicklas Backstrom and T.J. Oshie look to make the most of their vintage combination.
Connor McMichael was also one of the standouts from last game, as the 22-year-old was moving the puck well, getting to dangerous areas and had the team's best scoring chance of Friday's game when he rang a shot off the post.
Alex Alexeyev and Aliaksei Protas will also make their season debuts.
Puck drop is at 7 p.m. ET at Capital One Arena. The game will be on Monumental Sports Network.
