Logan Thompson 'Couldn't Be More Happy' To Sign Long-Term With Capitals, Explains Why DC Has Been A Perfect Fit

The Capitals inked Thompson to a six-year contract extension on Monday.

Jose Theodore Says Capitals Were Best Shot At Cup

Logan Thompson knew that leaving the Vegas Golden Knights behind wouldn't be easy, but it was a necessary step to push his career forward. It landed him with the Washington Capitals, who have proven to be the perfect fit — and will now remain home for the long haul.

Thompson and Washington finalized a six-year, $35.1 million extension on Monday morning following a stellar start to his tenure in the District.

Thompson's road to the NHL has been a winding road, as he was a sixth-round pick in the WHL and found himself ultimately going undrafted and cut from the ECHL in 2019. Through hard work, he earned an entry-level contract with Vegas, where he showed his potential and won a Stanley Cup.

Ultimately, though, he wanted more of a chance, and knowing he wouldn't get it in Nevada, requested a trade.

"I knew it was a big risk leaving Vegas and what they had going on there, but I just wanted a different opportunity," Thompson said, adding, "I couldn't be more happy that I ended up with this organization."

General manager Chris Patrick said the organization has been thrilled with Thompson's play as he's established himself as "one of the top goaltenders in the NHL." The feeling is mutual for Thompson, who has enjoyed every second since being traded to D.C. this summer.

"I'm really happy to be here for many more years to come," Thompson said. "Love my time here, and just thankful for the opportunity that the Capitals gave me."

Thompson, who attended Capitals development camp in his amateur days, was already familiar with the organization, as well as goaltending coach Scott Murray.  It's made the transition easier for the Canadian-born netminder, who has boasted impressive numbers to open the campaign.

Through 27 games, he has gone 22-2-3 with a .925 save percentage, the second-best in the NHL, and a 2.09 GAA as Washington has proven to be the perfect fit.

At the end of the day, Thompson is looking forward to continuing to establish himself between the pipes for the Capitals and remain consistent, while just enjoying the game altogether.

"I think I’m just having a lot of fun, and not thinking,  just going out there and playing," Thompson said. "It's kind of been my new mindset this year. It’s just been a lot of fun and I’m enjoying every minute of it.”
