Here's what Matthew Phillips had to say after scoring his first NHL goal and first NHL assist en route to the Capitals' 3-2 win over the Flames.

WASHINGTON — Alex Ovechkin pointed at Matthew Phillips as they waited to take the ice for warmups, reminding him of the circumstances going into the Washington Capitals' Monday meeting with the Calgary Flames: it was time to go against his former team.

"They don't f--ing want you, but you know what?" he asked, then led his teammates in song, "We want you, baby, ba-da-da-da-da-da, I need you, baby."

It was the precursor to a big night for the small forward, who got to show the Flames exactly what they missed out on after he got just two NHL games with the club over the course of seven years with the organization.

"It feels pretty good. I'll leave it at that," he said with a grin.

He didn't just put up a multi-point effort; he gave the Capitals life, resurrecting his bench — and the fanbase inside and outside of Capital One Arena — with his first NHL goal and assist within minutes of one another.

“Yeah i think that you guys probably saw that we started playing with a lot more energy after that and he kinda just brought a lot of life to the group and we kinda just broke that ice and we kept firing on all cylinders," Connor McMichael, who got the team's second goal of the game, said.

Phillips' effort ultimately paved the way for a 3-2 shootout win. It was an emotional one for the 25-year-old, who had his dad, Doug, in the building and family watching back home.

At the end of the day, though, Phillips insists it wasn't necessarily a revenge game for him, but business as usual. Still, he even admitted himself: it's pretty sweet.

"I'm always trying to play my best every single game, and tonight was no different. Obviously, it's kind of funny that we ended up playing them the second game of the season, and it kind of happened pretty quick," Phillips said. "It was great, very lucky to play with some awesome players. See the pass Sonny made, I just had to bury it."
