It was a hard-fought battle between the two top teams in their respective conferences, as the Washington Capitals and Winnipeg Jets battled it out until the final second.

And though the Capitals stuck with it and rallied thanks to Alex Ovechkin continuing his "GR8 Chase," they could only leave with one point in a 3-2 overtime loss to Winnipeg.

Here are all the takeaways from the defeat.

Alex Ovechkin Hits 889 To Move Within Six of Wayne Gretzky, Late Rally Not Enough For Capitals

Connor Hellebuyck was a formidable opponent for D.C. on Tuesday, and through the first two and a half periods, was nearly impossible to beat, giving up just one goal early on and stopping every bid from Alex Ovechkin.

However, the Capitals captain would not leave empty-handed. With just around four minutes to go in regulation, he got to the left circle and sniped a pass from Aliaksei Protas past Hellebuyck to make it a 2-2 game and ultimately force overtime.

It marked Ovechkin's 36th goal of the season and third in the last five games, and he now sits at 889 career goals. He needs five to tie Wayne Gretzky's all-time record and six to pass.

Ultimately, Ovechkin's goal set the Capitals up for a point, but it wasn't enough in the OT loss.

    Mangiapane, Protas Stay Hot

Going up against the reigning Vezina winner, Washington knew it would be difficult to find twine, and it took quite a bit of work to get there. Fortunately, the team's top performers remained consistent to help force a point.

Andrew Mangiapane made it a 1-1 game in the first period after coming out of the penalty box and firing home a shot blocker side for his third goal in as many games. His line was one of the best on the night, but that was the only goal to beat Hellebuyck and Winnipeg. Overall, Mangiapane has points in four of his last five.

Meanwhile, Aliaksei Protas extended his point streak to five games with an assist on Ovechkin's goal. His 49 points at 5-on-5 are tied with Brandon Hagel for the fifth-most in the NHL.

Power Play Remains Area Of Concern

The Capitals also continue to struggle on the man advantage, and in a game where a power-play goal could've tilted the ice, they couldn't deliver.

There were chances to convert, but Hellebuyck stepped up, and the execution wasn't there. Washington also couldn't get things set up cleanly.

D.C. is now 0-for-16 on the power play over the last nine games.

Thompson Stands Tall, But Mistakes Costly

Hellebuyck had a good match at the other end of the ice, with Logan Thompson, who remains in the Vezina race down the stretch, starting for Washington. The goaltenders didn't disappoint, as Thompson matched Hellebuyck's brilliance with great saves of his own.

Unfortunately, mistakes on defense proved costly; the Jets' first goal, a point shot from Josh Morrissey, went off of Martin Fehervary and in. Then, on Mason Appleton's go-ahead goal at the end of the second, the Capitals got caught flat-footed fresh off the penalty kill as the Jets capitalized on the transition.

Then, in overtime, another poorly-timed line change led to a breakaway from Nikolaj Ehlers, who beat Thompson cleanly.

Thompson stopped 22 of 25 shots in the loss.
