The latest trade talks on the Kuznetsov and Mantha front seem to indicate that both will be here to stay for the Capitals — for now.

The latest trade talks on the Kuznetsov and Mantha front seem to indicate that both will be here to stay for the Capitals — for now.

Latest On Kuznetsov & Mantha Trade Talks As Capitals Approach Training Camp

The Washington Capitals are exactly one month away from the start of training camp, and general manager Brian MacLellan said that the team still has unfinished business.

MacLellan said earlier this month that Washington was still looking to revamp the top-6 and has been in contact with agents and teams about potential moves. The Capitals had been aggressive at the draft and tried to make some moves, but those conversations never came to fruition.

Reports indicated that Evgeny Kuznetsov and Anthony Mantha were part of those conversations and were being shopped earlier in the offseason. And though the two may still be trade chips, it seems unlikely that they will move, per The Daily Faceoff's Frank Seravalli.

"I don't think there's a huge likelihood or probability to it, but I do think the Caps would like to find a way to move Evgeny Kuznetsov," Seravalli said on The DFO Rundown, adding, "We know they'd like to move Mantha... There's a lot of ground to make up for the Caps, and a new coach, by the way."

After an All-Star campaign in 2021-22, Kuznetsov struggled with inconsistency this past season, and his effort was also criticized. He registered 12 goals and 43 assists for 55 points in 81 games, marking his lowest scoring rate in nearly a decade. The Russian's shooting percentage also plummeted to seven percent.

Meanwhile, Mantha couldn't find his game and had just 11 goals and 16 assists for 27 points in 67 games while also navigating a number of healthy scratches due to his underwhelming performance.

MacLellan didn't hold back on breakdown day, calling both of their seasons "disappointing."

Going into camp, it appears more likely that both will start the season in D.C.

Back in June, The Athletic's Pierre LeBrun explained that Mantha wasn't getting much interest on the trade market.

Looking at the big picture, though, holding onto both Mantha and Kuznetsov and seeing if they turn things around may be a better option rather than trading them for a minimal return while their trade values are low.

new interview with RDS shows promise from Mantha, who has been training rigorously in hopes of bouncing back.

"I don't think I was present and involved enough for my team. Whether it's points, checking or all the little details," Mantha said in the interview. "I want to be ready this year."

He added that he has lost a significant amount of weight and is looking to be at least 10 pounds lighter than he was last season (240 pounds). Meanwhile, his trainers are trying to get him to 227-228 pounds and already see more speed and agility in his game.

As for Kuznetsov, he appeared on the Hockey On Kinopoisk podcast earlier this month and noted that his trade request was not quite true while adding that "95 percent" of the talks surrounding him were "superficial," despite Capitals writer Mike Vogel reporting in July that he did, in fact, request to be moved.

Still, he was adamant at season's end that he would rebound for Washington in 2023-24.

"There's a lot of time to think about and refocus, but I'm pretty sure I'm going to find a solution," Kuznetsov said in April.

The Capitals return in the coming weeks for informal skates before camp kicks off on Sept. 20.
