Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin continues to be honored for breaking Wayne Gretzky's all-time goals record, and this time, it came on the soccer pitch.

Ovechkin took the field ahead of FC Dynamo's game against Krasnodar on Wednesday, taking part in a ceremonial kickoff ahead of the game in honor of his record.

The 39-year-old appeared in a friendly match for FC Dynamo back in 2022, and has close ties to the team, with his late father, Mikhail, having played for the club during his own distinguished sports career.

Ovechkin will spend the next couple of weeks back home in Russia before heading back to the United States for what will be his 21st NHL season. He has been part of numerous ceremonies and festivities this summer to pay tribute to his career and record, including a couple of on-ice matches, a steak-grilling competition and more.

He is coming off one of the best seasons of his career, where he put up 44 goals — the third-most in the league — in 65 games and overcame a broken fibula to become the league's all-time leading goal scorer.
