Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin is the greatest goal scorer in NHL history.

The Capitals captain scored his 895th career goal on the power play in the second period against the New York Islanders, firing a trademark shot from his office in the left circle past Ilya Sorokin to overtake Wayne Gretzky as the league's all-time leading goal scorer.

He dove to center ice in celebration as he was mauled by his teammates.

Ovechkin scored goals in five straight games to reach the historic mark.
