Sergei Ovechkin is all about scoring goals, and did just that as he scored a hat trick and skated with his dad, Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin, at the Ovi Cup match between Ovechkin's team and Ilya Kovalchuk's team in Russia on Friday.
Ovechkin's son, serving as an alternate captain while his father wore the captain's "C" ("K" in Russia), scored three goals in regulation and added a shootout goal in an eventual 8-8 tie with Ilya Kovalchuk's team.
The two also played on the same line, and Evgeni Malkin served as the head coach for Ovechkin's team. Though a coach's decision meant to move things around and have Sergei at center, he refused and stuck in his role on the wing, where he then scored his first of the game.
The 7-year-old then completed the hat trick in the second period, celebrating in classic Ovi fashion after falling to the ice.
Ovechkin, meanwhile, scored two goals of his own and had quite the time watching his son play the game that he loves.
"A sense of pride, a sense of joy. I get nervous because he's playing against grown men, after all. He's so fearless — always eager to get out on the ice — so I'm just happy for him," Ovechkin told sports.ru, per a DeepL translation.
The Ovi Cup gala match takes place every year and features several NHL and KHL stars as part of the Ovi Cup tournament in Moscow that features 24 top youth hockey teams from Russia, Belarus, and Kazakhstan.
