ARLINGTON, V.A. — Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin continues to add to his historic season, as he’s been nominated for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy.
The Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy is awarded annually to the player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey.
Ovechkin was named the Capitals’ nominee by the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association’s Washington chapter.
The 39-year-old made history, overtaking Wayne Gretzky as the NHL’s all-time leading goal scorer with a 42-goal campaign despite breaking his leg earlier in the season.
Ovechkin was off to a hot start, but broke his fibula on Nov. 18 against Utah Hockey Club after colliding with Jack McBain. He missed 16 consecutive games, the longest absence of his career, but picked up where he left off, maintaining his impressive pace to take sole possession of the new NHL record of 895.
The last Capital to win the award was Jose Theodore in 2010. John Carlson was the team’s nominee last season following his return from a fractured skull.
The 2025 NHL Awards take place in June.
