WASHINGTON — It was fitting, something out of a storybook as Alex Ovechkin took the stage at Capital One Arena to the tune of his goal song, "Shake, Rattle & Roll," and bleating baby goats in the background.
The Washington Capitals honored their captain with the ultimate celebration on Friday to commemorate Ovechkin overtaking Wayne Gretzky as the NHL's greatest goal scorer, getting everything right down to the very last detail.
In addition to different exhibits featuring the very net from Long Island that Ovechkin scored 895 on, the Capitals celebrated Ovechkin with 895 memorabilia, an on-stage presentation on the same stage he inked his 13-year extension on back in 2008 and of course, goats in Ovechkin jerseys to celebrate the league's new "GOAT" of goal scoring.
"It's unbelievable," Ovechkin said.
In front of over 3,000 fans on a rainy afternoon in D.C., Ovechkin took the time to celebrate the record with family and friends as he sat alongside teammates Nicklas Backstrom and T.J. Oshie and reflected on his career and milestone with hosts Tarik El-Bashir and Alan May.
Still, Ovechkin wouldn't take credit himself.
"Without the support, what i have from my boys, I would never reach that kind of tremendous accomplishment," Ovechkin declared.
The 39-year-old was also presented with an official resolution from the D.C. Council celebrating Ovechkin's achievement and the day April 6, 2025, which will go down in history.
Owner Ted Leonsis also took the stage to discuss Ovechkin and how he transformed the city of D.C., and Ovechkin responded in kind, joking it was time to ink another 13-year extension.
At the end of it all, Ovechkin was emotional as he waved to the fans and left the arena, once again to the chants of "Ovi, Ovi, Ovi."
