The Washington Capitals added to their already successful week on Tuesday, as they've officially clinched the Metropolitan Division title.
Washington clinched the division after the Carolina Hurricanes fell 3-0 to the Buffalo Sabres.
This is the Capitals' first Metropolitan Division title since 2019-20 and the sixth time they've clinched since 2015-16.
With the division title, Washington will face either the first or second wild-card team in the Eastern Conference depending on if it finishes with more points than the Atlantic Division champion.
The Capitals' turnaround this season has been a welcome sight in the District, as the team went from being the last team in the NHL to clinch in 2023-24 to the first team to clinch this year.
Alex Ovechkin has led the team to new heights while overtaking Wayne Gretzky as the NHL's all-time leading goal scorer, while new additions like Pierre-Luc Dubois, Jakob Chychrun, Matt Roy and Logan Thompson, among others, have also added to D.C.'s strong showing. All the while, Dylan Strome leads the team with a career-high 76 points, and young talent like Aliaksei Protas and Connor McMichael have hit their strides as well.
Washington is hoping its regular season success translates to the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs, especially after having suffered a first-round sweep a season ago. The Capitals haven't won a playoff series since winning the Stanley Cup in 2018.
