The Washington Capitals will see the Prokop brothers join the ranks of the organization, as defenseman Luke Prokop and forward Josh Prokop signed contracts for the 2026-27 season with the team's ECHL affiliate South Carolina Stingrays on Thursday.
With the Prokop brothers signing, there are now four sets of brothers across different levels of the Capitals organization, as they join Dylan and Matt Strome, Aliaksei and Ilya Protas and twins Adam and Justin Hall, who signed with South Carolina earlier this summer, as the other siblings playing for Washington or one of its affiliates.
Luke, originally drafted by the Nashville Predators in the third round of the 2020 NHL Draft, has spent the last three seasons in the AHL with the Milwaukee Admirals and Bakersfield Condors.
In 42 games with Bakersfield last season, the 6-foot-5 shutdown blueliner had three goals and eight assists for 11 points, along with 20 penalty minutes.
Luke made history in 2021 as the first player under NHL contract to come out as gay. He has spent the last three seasons in the AHL, where he also became the league's first gay player.
Josh, meanwhile, is a playmaking right wing who most recently played professionally with Metal Ligaen, the top flight of hockey in Denmark, with the Herning Blue Fox.
In 47 games, he had 17 goals and 19 assists for 36 points, and then put up seven goals adn five assists in the playoffs to help Herning to a Danish championship. Before that, the 26-year-old wore the "C" at the University of Alberta and also appeared in seven AHL games with the Condors, recording a goal and two assists.
The signings reunite the brothers, who last played together in 2020-21 with the WHL's Calgary Hitmen.
