After leading the morning skate, the injured netminder nears a return. Washington must now decide whether to start him against Philadelphia or prioritize long-term health.

Logan Thompson could be back in the crease for the Washington Capitals tonight when they host the Philadelphia Flyers at Capital One Arena.

Thompson was the first goalie off the ice at Wednesday’s optional morning skate, according to multiple reporters. However, he remains on injured reserve with a lower-body injury, and his status for tonight’s game is still up in the air.

Head coach Spencer Carbery said the team will see how Thompson feels Wednesday afternoon before making a decision. If he isn’t ready to go, Charlie Lindgren or Mitchell Gibson could get the start in net.

Thompson suffered the injury during the Capitals’ 5-2 loss to the Los Angeles Kings last week. He missed several practices before returning to the ice, and while his participation in Wednesday’s skate is an encouraging sign, Washington may not want to rush him back.

With another game against the Nashville Predators coming up Thursday, giving Thompson an extra day to recover could make sense, especially this early in the season. If he needs more time, Lindgren or Gibson could step in against Philadelphia.

Thompson has posted a 4-3 record this season, along with a 2.90 goals-against average and a .901 save percentage.

Puck drop between the Capitals and Flyers is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET.
