ARLINGTON, V.A. — The Washington Capitals have re-signed one of their most important blueliners, inking Martin Fehervary to a seven-year, $42 million extension.

Fehervary became eligible to sign an extension on Tuesday and agreed to terms shortly after the start of free agency. His deal begins next year and carries an AAV of $6 million.

The Slovak blueliner, who will represent his coutnry in the upcoming Olympic games, is coming off a career year where he put up five goals and 20 assists for 25 points in 81 games. He's been a constant on the top-4 and able to play with just about anyone, while playing a key shutdown role.

Fehervary led the Capitals in average shorthanded ice time (3:02) this past season and ranked fourth in total shorthanded ice time league-wide this past season. He also ranked second on the team in blocks (150) and third in hits (139).

"Martin possesses all the core qualities of a Washington Capital," said Patrick. "His skating ability, conditioning and tireless competitiveness, combined with a team first attitude and relentless drive to excel, make him a vital part of our blue line. Signing him to a long-term contract at just 25 years old is an exciting step for the future of our organization.”

Fehervary underwent meniscus surgery in April and is expected to return to the ice in a couple of weeks for training. He is on track to return for the start of training camp and be ready for the season.
