The Capitals selected Sparks with the No. 101 pick.
The Washington Capitals moved up early in the fourth round, acquiring the No. 101 pick to select winger Tyus Sparks.
Washington sent the Columbus Blue Jackets the No. 112 pick and a 2028 fifth-rounder, originally from the San Jose Sharks, in return so they could take Sparks.
Sparks had 65 points in 69 games split between the WHL's Vancouver Giants and Spokane Chiefs this past season, where he had 28 points in the final 29 games of the season following his trade to the Chiefs. He led Spokane in scoring at the end of the season and ranked second in assists and power-play goals.
The 18-year-old is a strong, speedy skater who is relentless on the forecheck. He can force turnovers, win races and puck battles and doesn't shy away from physicality. He He's also a threat on offense, known for his wicked shot and ability to generate chances out of nowhere.
Sparks, who hails from Idaho, has had an interesting journey to the NHL Draft, having grown up playing football before switching to hockey full-time. His father was a CFL quarterback.
With his hometown not having much opportunity, he got a chance to play AAA hockey with the Los Angeles Jr. Kings. He didn't want to completely leave home behind, though, so flew himself for games on weekends.
He eventually landed in the WHL, and now, he gets his start in D.C.
