Alex Ovechkin is looking forward to the Capitals' second-round series against Carolina.

ARLINGTON, V.A. — After a day off to get some more rest, the Washington Capitals were back at MedStar Capitals Iceplex for one last full practice before the team takes on the Carolina Hurricanes in the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

It was an intense and longer practice, with Washington running lines and working on 5-on-5 play, breakouts and special teams. The lines are the same as they were to close out the first-round series against the Montreal Canadiens, with Taylor Raddysh, Ethan Frank, Dylan McIlrath and Ethan Bear as the extras.

Here are the expected combinations for Game 1:

    Alex Ovechkin-Dylan Strome-Anthony Beauvillier

    Connor McMichael-Pierre-Luc Dubois-Tom Wilson

    Andrew Mangiapane-Lars Eller-Ryan Leonard

    Brandon Duhaime-Nic Dowd-Aliaksei Protas

    Jakob Chychrun-John Carlson

    Rasmus Sandin-Matt Roy

    Alex Alexeyev-Trevor van Riemsdyk

    Logan Thompson

    Charlie Lindgren

In addition to practice, the team has been reviewing quite a bit of film to prepare for the Hurricanes, especially when it comes to special teams and the man advantage.

"Lots of video so far, just to know exactly what they're doing. And then it's going to come down to compete and executing," Tom Wilson said, adding, "So we'll come up with the game plan that's going to give us the best ability to take advantage on the power play. We know they're going to be one of the hardest-working, detailed PKs in the league. And we're going to have to match that level of accountability and execution."

This marks the first time since 2019 that the Capitals will face Carolina in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. That series went to seven games, and the Hurricanes secured an overtime win to eliminate D.C., the reigning Stanley Cup champions at the time.

Captain Alex Ovechkin is looking forward to the rematch, and added that this will be a challenge that he thinks his group is ready for.

"This is the most fun time of the year," Ovechkin said. "You work all summer, all year, 82 games and this is it. This is final step, and it's a hard one."

Game 1 is on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Capital One Arena.
