The Washington Capitals are officially in playoff mode, as they kick off the postseason on Monday with Game 1 against the Montreal Canadiens.
And, when it comes to who will be in net, coach Spencer Carbery is playing his cards very, very close to the vest.
"You'll find out tonight," he said after practice regarding the starting goaltender.
Logan Thompson was off the ice first at morning skate, a usual indicator of who will start, but Carbery wouldn't commit to either him or Charlie Lindgren in net. He also wouldn't wsay whether or not Thompson, who has not played since April 2 due to an upper-body injury, is medically cleared to return.
Thompson has had a strong first season ith the Capitals, going 31-6-6 with a .910 save percentage and 2.49 GAA in 43 games. Lindgren has played in 39 games, going 20-14-3 with a .896 save percentage and 2.73 GAA.
Meanwhile, Aliaksei Protas skated again in a non-contact jersey ahead of practice, getting some individual work in and also passing the puck around with Ethen Frank.
He did not stay on for the morning skate, but it was another significant step forward for the 23-year-old as he recovers from a skate cut to the foot suffered on April 4.
Carbery said he is optimistic that Protas will return at some point in the series against the Canadiens, though he didn't specify when.
Puck drop is at 7 p.m. at Capital One Arena. Here are the projected lines based on practice:

Andrew Mangiapane-Lars Eller-Ryan Leonard
