ARLINGTON, V.A. — The Washington Capitals took care of business on Tuesday, addressing their biggest pending unrestricted free agent as they locked up Jakob Chychrun to an eight-year contract extension.
Chychrun's deal carries an AAV of $9 million.
"Jakob is a proven, dynamic defenseman in the prime of his career who has established himself as one of the premier blueliners in the NHL," general manager Chris Patrick said. "His work ethic, skill set, and ability to excel in all situations at both ends of the ice make him a valuable asset to our team. He is a perfect fit with our culture and vision for the future, and we couldn't be more thrilled that he will continue to be part of our organization for the next eight years."
Through 65 games this season, Chychrun has recorded 18 goals and 25 assists for a career-high 43 points. His six game-winning goals this season lead all NHL defensemen, and he leads all Capitals blueliners in goals and power-play points. When Chychrun scores, Washington has a record of 17-0-1.
