The Washington Capitals are holding onto Nic Dowd and signed the center to a two-year, $6 million extension on Wednesday.
Dowd has spent the last seven years in Washington and has been a key part of the lineup, serving as the main driver of the powerhouse fourth line and a top penalty killer, while also serving as one of the alternate captains this season and making a significant impact off the ice throughout the DMV community.
"Nic has been an integral member of our team, both on the ice and in our leadership group, and we are excited to extend his contract for an additional two years," general manager Chris Patrick said. "During his time in Washington, Nic has proven to be a consistent and reliable two-way player who can be trusted in all situations. This signing solidifies our depth at the critical center position as we move forward. Off the ice, Nic has been a consummate professional and has made significant contributions to our community through his charitable efforts."
The 34-year-old is putting the finishing touches on one of his best seasons yet, as he hit a career high in goals (14) and points (27) while averaging 15:10 minutes per game, and he also won the Caps Community Care Award. He also earned Selke consideration last season and has 150 points through 450 games with D.C.
"I strive to go and do the exact same thing every single night and get better," Dowd said. "The foundation of my game, it's pretty simple."
His teammates also noted just how big his impact is night in and night out, and look forward to having him on board for two more seasons.

At 34, the Capitals pivot is on pace for a career year.
"He leaves his teammates in a better spot when he comes off the ice. He's always the first one to change in the o-zone, he's always the first one in on the battles," Tom Wilson said. "He works extremely hard every single night."
"As a goalie, you just got 100 percent trust, and you know he's gonna make the right play pretty much every single time," Charlie Lindgren added.
