The Washington Capitals have put pen to paper, signing newly acquired RFA Justin Sourdif to a two-year, $1.65 million contract.
Sourdif's contract is a one-way deal and will carry an average annual value of $825,000.
Washington traded for the 23-year-old winger ahead of the 2025 NHL Draft, sending a 2026 second-rounder and 2027 sixth-rounder to the Florida Panthers in return.
Sourdif appeared in 43 games with the AHL's Charlotte Checkers last season, picking up a career-high 34 points (16 goals, 18 assists). His .79 points per game were the second-highest on the team among forwards with at least 20 games played as he helped Charlotte to the Calder Cup Finals, and in his one NHL game this past season, he scored his first NHL goal.
The 5-foot-11, 181-pound forward is a versatile player with great hands and tremendous upside. He also owns a strong shot and can make plays on the fly, while he's also able to use his speed and hockey IQ to get to the right places at the right time.
Sourdif is expected to make the full-time NHL jump next season and fill in on the bottom-6, where there will be plenty of vacancies with Lars Eller, Taylor Raddysh and Andrew Mangiapane not expected to return.
The up-and-coming prospect brings more versatility and ability to the mix and can pack a punch while providing a much-needed spark and new look. He also fits into the team's plans to inject more youth into the lineup in the coming years.
With a two-year extension, Sourdif will get the chance to show Washington what he brings to the table on a low-risk, low-cost deal. After that, the Capitals can assess his performance and go from there with a decision.
