The Washington Capitals surprised head coach Spencer Carbery in a big way, as his family presented him with the Jack Adams Award as the NHL's coach of the year.

The second-year coach was surprised by family during a staged interview with Monumental Sorts & Entertainment Broadcaster Joe Beninati.

Carbery is the first coach ever to win coach of the year awards in the NHL, AHL and ECHL, and is the fourth head coach in Capitals history to win the award.

Carbery led Washington to a historic 52-22-9 record that landed the team first in the Metropolitan Division and Eastern Conference following a season where they barely snuck into the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

His Capitals also ranked second in the NHL for goals for (286) and was ranked first in comeback wins (25). He also increased the goal differential to plus-56.
