Lapierre was a pending RFA, and the Capitals had to make a decision on his future.

The Washington Capitals are moving on from Hendrix Lapierre.

Washington has traded Lapierre to the Penguins in exchange for a 2027 third-round pick and a 2028 fifth-round pick.

The 24-year-old was a pending restricted free agent, and the Capitals had to make a decision on his future following years of inconsistency and a rough past season.

Lapierre, the Capitals' first-round pick in the 2020 NHL Draft, had flashes of strong play, but ultimately, wasn't able to find his footing or fit in at the highest level with D.C.

While he cracked the opening night roster this past season to make the full-time jump up to the NHL, he wasn't able to follow up on his strong training camp. Through 74 games, he had just four goals and 12 assists for 16 points, averaging just 8:50 per game.

"I think he did get some opportunity. Opportunities higher up with some better players, and I think probably he admitted he didn't do as well as he would have hoped with that," general manager Chris Patrick said at the end of the season. "For him, he's shown that he can play in this league and play a solid, veteran-type game within his mistakes, and now he needs to show that he can produce and be a point-getting guy with his skill set."

With a change of scenery seeming to be the best case for both parties, Washington made a move in order to gain draft capital rather than letting him go for nothing.
