ARLINGTON, V.A. — By no means was this the way Sonny Milano wrote things up.
The 29-year-old missed almost the entire 2024-25 season with an upper-body injury, and then, as he neared a return, suffered a setback that officially put an end to his campaign. And now, going into next year, the Capitals are unsure what the future holds.
"It was a really tough season for Sonny, and he worked really hard to try to come back," general manager Chris Patrick said. "I think he's still kind of in that process of trying to see if he can get himself healthy, and I think that's going to go into the summer."
Milano has one year left on the three-year extension he signed in 2023. He appeared in just three games this past season, going scoreless with a plus/minus of minus-3 while averaging just 7:13 minutes a game.
Over three seasons with Washington, Milano has picked up 26 goals and 56 points in 118 appearances. In 313 career NHL games over 11 years, the 2014 first-round pick has 62 goals and 76 assists for 137 points.
When it comes to what's next, the Capitals will see where Milano is at going into this coming season and go from there. Ultimately, though, they're going to give him all the resources they can to decide what's best for him and his career.
"We're just going to have to see where he is as the summer goes on. We're going to have to give him some time and space to figure out where he is and how his injuries are holding up and go from there," Patrick said.
