Gallant was hired by New York in 2021 and helped the team reach the Eastern Conference Final in the 2022 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

The Washington Capitals are in the search for a new head coach, and Gerard Gallant could be an option as his tenure with the New York Rangers has come to an end.

Gallant and the Rangers have agreed to part ways after two seasons. He led New York to the Eastern Conference Final in the 2022 Stanley Cup Playoffs and helped the Rangers finish third in the Metropolitan Division this season, but they suffered a first-round exit at the hands of the New Jersey Devils.

Gallant has coached for 11 years, going 369-262-70 in 705 games (.517 points percentage). He won the Jack Adams Award in 2018 and was nominated last season.

The 59-year-old spent three years with the Columbus Blue Jackets and three years with the Florida Panthers before stepping behind the bench as the first head coach of the Vegas Golden Knights. In his first season in 2017-18, he led the club to the Stanley Cup Final, where the team fell in five games to the Capitals.

However, in 2019-20, he was relieved of his duties with the team in the mix but not getting the results it wanted.

Gallant provides the Washington with another name to look at on the market. The team is in the hunt for a new bench boss after parting ways with Peter Laviolette back on April 14.

The team is also reportedly set to interview Tampa Bay Lightning assistant Jeff Halpern and appears to be waiting on assistant Spencer Carbery. General manager Brian MacLellan is not in a rush, though, and also expressed that the team will explore all options. But certainly, Gallant is an interesting one.
