After having to step away from hockey the last couple of seasons amid ongoing issues with his hip, Washington Capitals legend Nicklas Backstrom looks set to resume his playing career this coming season — and he's doing it where it all began.

Brynäs IF, Backstrom's original SHL team that he played with before joining the Capitals, is holding a press conference on Monday, where it is expected to announce that it is signing the 37-year-old to a contract for the upcoming campaign, per reports.

Backstrom's career has been on hold for the last couple of seasons amid complications following hip resurfacing surgery he underwent in June 2022, an option he turned to after years of chronic hip pain and no permanent solution.

The Swede did what several players hadn't, returning from the surgery in January 2023 and closing out that season with 21 points in 39 games. However, after suiting up for just eight games in 2023-24, he had to step away.

Over 17 years with the Capitals, Backstrom picked up 271 goals and 762 assists for 1,033 points in 1,105 games.

Now,  he'll get a chance to start his career again, this time coming full circle and returning to where it all began.
