There's no one in the NHL who can shoot the puck like Alex Ovechkin — and the data backs it up.
Not only does Ovechkin have the most goals in NHL history, but when it comes to the types of shots he's scoring on, he holds an impressive lead over his colleagues.
Per NHL EDGE, Ovechkin leads the league in slap shot goals over the last 10 seasons with 107. Steven Stamkos sits second at 104, and the next player after both of them is David Pastrnak at 78.
Of course, most of Ovechkin's slap shot goals come off his classic one-timer from his "office" on the power play, where he's also the NHL's all-time leading scorer with 331 PPGs. It's power, speed and accuracy that makes his shot so unique, and he's been able to maintain consistency in his form despite the passage of time.
The 40-year-old ranked in the 99th percentile when it came to hardest shots this season, hitting a 97.30 MPH shot during the 2025-26 campaign. Most of his shots come from the left circle at mid-range.
Not only does Ovechkin lead in slap shot goals over the last 10 seasons, but ranks second in snap shot goals with 94. Leon Draisaitl leads in that category with 145 goals off snap shots over the last decade.
Ovechkin is returning to D.C. on a one-year contract for 2026-27, where he'll look to continue to show he can be an impact player while helping the revamped Capitals return to the playoffs and make a statement as a legitimate contender.
"I know I can still play. I know I can still bring energy to the locker room and energy on the ice," Ovechkin said after re-signing.
Ovechkin has scored on every shot type but one in his NHL career: the wraparound.
