WASHINGTON — Alex Ovechkin wasn't going to stop at 895.

The Washington Capitals captain got to work quickly on Sunday against the Columbus Blue Jackets, firing home his 896th career NHL goal off a nice feed from Dylan Strome.

Jet Greaves also became the 184th NHL goaltender that Ovechkin has scored on over his 20-year career and NHL record, and it was No. 8's first goal since passing Wayne Gretzky's all-time record of 894 exactly one week ago on Long Island.

Ovechkin's goal marked his 43rd of the season, good for the third-most in the NHL. He has been scoring at a pace of .68 goals per game, which would have him on pace for 56 goals had he not been injured.

The 39-year-old is four goals away from 900 in his career, and has one more year left on his contract after this one. He would be the first player in NHL history to hit that mark.
