Cole Hutson is ready for the NHL jump, as the Washington Capitals are signing him to his entry-level contract.

The three-year deal carries an AAV of $975,000 and starts this season. He will join the Capitals immediately, and the team doesn’t have to open a roster spot.

The 19-year-old had 10 goals and 22 assists for 32 points in 35 NCAA games with the Boston University Terriers this season. Washington took Hutson 44th overall in the 2024 NHL Draft.

Hutson’s sophomore season with Boston University came to an end on Saturday after losing to UConn in the Hockey East Quarterfinals. He finished his collegiate career with 80 points (24 goals and 56 assists) in 74 games, which lead all NCAA defenseman over the last two seasons.

The Illinois native will report to Washington immediately, and following an off day on Monday, he will take part in his first team practice on Tuesday. Depending on how things go over the next handful of days, his NHL debut could come on Wednesday at home against the Ottawa Senators.

When it comes to where Hutson will slot in, the left-hand shot can play a number of roles and has showcased versatility over his young career so far.

General manager Chris Patrick mentioned at the deadline that he gives coach Spencer Carbery a handful of options when it comes to deployment, and he could potentially get time alongside new acquisition Timothy Liljegren.

That said, Hutson's expected to not only bring offense, but smooth skating and high hockey IQ to the blue line.
