WASHINGTON — Leave it to these Washington Capitals to find a way.

After a rough start saw them go down two early, Washington stormed back, as Aliaksei Protas put up three points and teamed up with Tom Wilson to power a third-period surge which included two shorthanded goals — that set up a 5-2 victory.

Here are all the takeaways from the team's third striaght win.

Third Line Helps Capitals Bust Out After Another Slow Start

Coming into Friday's contest, the Capitals knew that the Red Wings liked to take advantage and jump on them early on, and that was exactly what happened just 43 seconds into the first.

Dylan Larkin banked in a shot off Logan Thompson's mask and in to make it 1-0, and minutes later, Moritz Seider scored on the power play to put the Capitals down by two.

It was the third line, though, that stepped up to pull D.C. back in the game. Taylor Raddysh got Washington on the board near the end of the frame, stuffing home a rebound off a great feed from Andrew Mangiapane.

That line generated some good chances over the course of the game,  and a day where general manager Chris Patrick acquired Anthony Beauvillier to bolster the middle-6, that trio made a strong case for its play as it looks to prove that it can produce when needed.

Protas, Wilson Lead Third-Period Surge As Penalty Kill Strikes Twice

With the team trailing 2-1, the Capitals needed to again find a way, and did just that with a roaring start to the third.

Aliaksei Protas has found himself in a bit of a tough stretch of late, with just one point over his last five games and just two goals in his last 11 overall. However, he turned it back on Friday to get back to his dangerous scoring ways.

On the penalty kill, Protas collected a pass from Tom Wilson and took matters into his own hands, storming down the wing and firing a shot shortside for his 24th of the season.

Just 1:06 minutes later, Jakob Chychrun busted out of his own recent slump, firing home a point shot through a screen in front to give Washington the lead. It marked his 18th goal of the season, and Dylan Strome and Pierre-Luc Dubois extended their respective point streaks to three games with the assists.

Protas wasn't done there, though. Shortly after converting on his shorthanded chance, the 23-year-old got the puck from Connor McMichael and rocketed home a quick shot for his 25th of the season and second of the game to make it 4-2.

Not only did Protas score shorthanded early in the third, but Tom Wilson added his own shorthanded goal for good measure later in the frame, breaking away and putting D.C. up 5-2 with his 29th goal of the season and ninth goal in 11 games.

It marked his third straight game with a goal and his ninth goal in his last 11 contests, and Protas assisted on Wilson's tally for a three-point night.
